Water Damage? Replace Drywall?

I ran into an interesting problem Friday night. A homeowner had a clean water line break in his house and he had a lot of water in his beautiful finished basement. We extracted the water from the floor and carpet, set the drying equipment and left.

The real problems began the next day... he wanted drywall removed. Because it was wet. He was convinced that it could not be dried and that he would have a lot of mold behind it. None of my protocol recitations or insurance reassurances could convince him otherwise. (That last sentence was harder to write than it was to read.)

Fact is: if you have a clean water loss (water damage)... and you call the mitigation company out there within 24 hours, the drywall can be saved. Of course there are exceptions, but most of the time, that is true.

In this case, I did what the homeowner wanted and removed the drywall... but I am doubtful that the insurance company will pay for it. But doing whatever the customer wants is the definition of service. Just make sure that the customer is well informed before you do it.

The World is Black...

The food is tasteless.
All I hear is a buzz.
My eyes are burning.
Love is hollow.
Even the pain is numb.
Vision blurred.
Trust is gone.

Don't Let a Poll Tell You How To Feel!

So the latest poll from CNN.com (thanks a lot CNN) tells us:

"On the day that President-elect Barack Obama visited the White House, a new national poll illustrates the daunting challenges he faces when it becomes his home next year. Only 16 percent of those questioned in a new CNN/Opinion Research Corporation survey released today say things are going well in the country today. That's an all-time low."

Frankly, I think that is a useless statistic based on "feeling". It was illustrated by some whining that a friend of mine was doing the other day. He was saying how terrible things were, so I asked him why he thought they were terrible. He said "because everybody is losing their job". I asked "Have you lost your job". He says "No". I asked "Do you know anyone personally that has lost their job?". Again, he answers "No".

"So why do you think things are terrible?" I asked him.

He says, "cause that is what I see on the news!"

And therein lies the problem.

He, like many Americans, is letting someone else think and feel for him.

Good Luck, Rowers

These guys from England are rowing their row boat from NYC to England. That is amazing. Most of us probably couldn't get across a back yard pond! You can track their progress here.

Bad Son...

So a buddy sends me pics of a buck he killed. I forward them to my Dad. He replies:

Nice to have pictures of your deer hunt! I wish I had some of mine!

Sorry, Dad! I'll get them to you any day now...

Queen of Cakes

My wife is an excellent all around chef. She doesn't have a restaurant, she doesn't work in a restaurant, but she serves the five of us some of the best meals on the planet. And I'm not just bragging!

But she also likes to bake cakes. She has a ritual of asking each of us what kind of cake we want for our birthday and this year our youngest chose Dora the Explorer. Not one to get one of those screened cakes, my wife hand crafted and hand painted a special cake for our little one.

So here is this year's first in the series of the summer birthday cakes:

And that made for one happy birthday girl:
